Subject: TA EAST NEWS 24TH AUGUST 2012

To TA East members and friends
From Ferg Muir

As I write this MILDENHALL RALLY is just getting under way with TA National Captain Dave Hardy orchestrating TA activities from his Hospitality Tent – or as Dave likes to call it, the hostility tent, on the campsite. Three-wheeled visitors should seek it out on the campsite. Rest assured that “hostility” is only a play on words and that a welcome is assured and a free up of tea very likely.

Then, as soon as this Thursday (30th AUG) we have our next
Starting with coffee (10.45-11.15 am very approx) at the Osiers Tearoom, Museum of East Anglian Life, near ASDA in STOWMARKET, Grid Ref: TL047586 and then a short rural ride to the “ANGEL” near the north end of the main street of DEBENHAM TM173635.

This is central for a good number of our members and I hope will prove popular. When I tried the Angel in the spring I found it refurbished, food imaginative, delicate (and served on wood!)….. so indulgence on cake at Osiers could be guilt-free. The Angel has nevertheless retained a “locals” bar, the beer was of the very first order and they were most welcoming. And I had a friendly response when I phoned just now. No need to book. If you do not find the TA indoors, remember to check the garden, just through the carriage-arch.

Looking further ahead on Sunday 16th September we have the East 50 on B50/18 at Morley. Entries £8.25, Event Sec: Martin Badham 01603 897738. This course uses the same roads as the TA East 12 hour in which Howard Waller came within 200 yards of beating the national competition record earlier this month. Immediately following the 50 the
Eastern Region AGM will be held – that is on Sunday 16th September 2012 at Morley Village Hall, Golf Links Road, Morley, Wymondham NR18 9SU- Grid ref: TM074977 – Approx 12.00 noon

Sun 7th OCTOBER EAST 25 on E1/25b, (near Lea Valley CC Clubhut) Entries £8.00, Event Sec Mike Keen 0207 253 2370. Followed by Lunchtime meet in the Newport ( Essex) area. – Details F Muir 01603 615000.

Members are invited to make a weekend of this by staying at the Comet Hut at Burton End on the Saturday night, where Mike and Frida will be presiding. You do not have to be a competitor to join us. The Comet Hut is 4.5 miles from the start.
(For completeness I will mention (in very small print) that it is possible to stay nearer the start at the Lea Valley CC’s OTHER hut where there are such sybaritic luxuries as showers, but….I suggest the TA stay together at the atmospheric and traditional hut at Burton End)

Time is running out before the last reasonable train for me to catch towards Mildenhall, so I must finish with some short items.

I attended the memorial service for TA Thames Valley region member LES REASON who lived in Holt and died recently at the age of 92. I cannot do a “quick” piece on Les, and in any case I look forward to reading what is written by those who knew him in his heyday as a tricyclist and much else in South Bucks.

Older members will also be sorry to hear that Winnie Ranson, has died. Winnie was wife of Lew Ranson of East Hanningfield, a regular attender at TA East Lunches, often acting as chauffeur for Herbie and Joyce Nevill.
On a more cheerful note MIKE KEEN – phone no above – is one of a number of Lea Valley members attending thebike World Champs in the hilly bit of Holland in September and would be pleased to hear of any other members who might also be attending and thirsty.

Must go!
